Roy Revisited

Writer's picture: Virgil LassiterVirgil Lassiter

Years ago, I penned an introduction to my guardian angel, Roy. It has been quite a while, so I would like to revisit. I am glad to present him to you.

This is Roy.

To refresh, Roy is the persona of an aging professional football player. A massive lineman who is getting soft around the middle but still badass.  No one would ever describe him as angelic, but that he is. Not your typical angel.  Roy is rough around the edges, unshaven, unkempt and beat up. BTW not all angels have wings.

Overall, he is a mix of hard as stone and soft as a cloud.

It has taken me years to understand who and what Roy means to me.  When I first grasped the idea that he existed I disbelieved the guardian angel thing let alone that I had a personal angel assigned to me and his name was Roy. Once I wrapped my mind around that I went on an adventure to identify what and when he was at work.

Eye opening to say the least.  Too many close calls, near accidents, mishaps, and danger. All those situations that provoke a “Thank God” were due to Roy’s action. A half a second sooner or later, my turning right instead of left, flight instead of fight.  So many more for sure, not that I was aware.

I am immensely grateful for those.

I do regret those times when I ignored him.  His job was not only my safety but also keeping me in God’s grace. I disappointed him more times than I can admit yet he kept fighting for me with the Father. Too many times I should have been counted as lost but no, it was Roy who believed in me enough to stay in my corner.  My sinfulness was a challenge, and I am sure I caused him less than stellar evaluations in his angel reviews. I am sure his contract was in jeopardy more than once.

Here is the bottom line.  Without Roy I would have been lost forever.  His strength, endurance and blocking ability kept the demons from taking me to the depths of the inferno.

You might think I am being fanciful, but my truth and devotion to Roy are absolute.

I thank God for the gift of Roy.  I urge you to meet your own guardian angel.
