The Civil Rights Act of 1965 is touted as a watershed advance for the country and blacks as a whole. A Democratic President was unable to get full party support and expended a lot of political capital to get the act passed by his party members.
The Democrats, especially southern Democrats fought against it. Made vile pronouncement that the passage of the bill would result in the mongrelization of the country.

See the actual votes. More Republicans, by percentage voted to pass the historic legislation.
Far from overwhelming support for black Americans. 91 Democratic representatives and 21 out of 27 Democrat Senators were opposed and vote Nay.

One has to ask why there is any allegiance between the black community and the Democrat party.
