Donald, Donald we love your ability to take the fight to your opponents, detractors and enemies, but in the First Presidential debate against Joe Biden you missed golden opportunities.
You allowed yourself to play into the hands of the Democrats and the left.
I identify two major points that were fast balls down the middle of the plate and you didn’t even make contact. Joe Biden asked you to denounce white supremacy an easy and forceful answer could have been yes and yes in strong terms. Defending white people against the claims of white privilege and systematic racism is one thing but failing to draw the line at a radical ideology of white supremacy is a huge mistake. “I absolutely object to the ideology of whites being superior” or “Each and every human being is equal in the eyes of God and the should be to the government as well” would have done the trick. If the fire in your belly required you to strike back this was the chance to make Biden denounce Black Lives Matter. “Joe will you take this opportunity to denounce the Black Lives Matter organization that is perpetuating vicious lies about law enforcement and demanding the defunding of police?” Of course he could not and that was the gold.
Donald your defense of law enforcement is so very widely known that it did not require such vociferous reiterating. You missed the chance to lists the many steps you have taken to support the black community, from bringing the black pastors and leaders to the White House, to meeting with leaders of the Latino community, to funding HBCUs, to the First Step Act, to creating economic opportunity zones, to most recently outlining your plan to create thousands of new black owned businesses and the list goes on. That was the response that was called for. Missed chance.
Although Joe Biden had hollow points to make, he made them well. His greatest tactic was looking directly into the camera and speaking to the viewers. It was effective. Far from being a bumbling fool Biden acquitted himself fairly well in style alone.
Donald, you did put him back on his heels a few times with pointed accusations about the Green New Deal where he first denies he supports it and then references it. His responses to the Hunter Biden factoids was a weak “not true, not true”.
Mr. President, you still have the support of this writer but you have made me nervous to consider that we are in the ninth inning of the most important ballgame of our lives and we cannot afford to have our ace sidelined by throwing wild pitches.
Rest up, regroup and be ready for the next outing. We have to win this thing.
