Assassination Politics

Writer's picture: Virgil LassiterVirgil Lassiter

Last evening we witnessed the attempted assassination of our fromer President and candidate for that office.

What we saw was reminiscent of the JFK, RFKJr, and MLK era of political killings and the attempt on President Reagan. The shootings of Jim Baker and Gabby Giffords must assuredly be included.

Memories fade over time until they are put back in the spotlight by very familiar happenings.

The hollow feeling in the pit of the stomach is identical in the aftermath.  How in the world does it make sense?  This cannot happen in our America.

Political zealots and their actions inflict not only death, or near death, evoking conflicted emotions.  Shock is the first.  We lose the false mindset of safety in our land. It is made of cellophane. A mere mirage. Anger follows immediately. The urge to find an avenue for the rage that wants to retaliate for the monstrous act. Sadness is overarching for the loss of the sanctity in our beliefs, of being thrust into a much lesser reality then we had assumed being citizens of the greatest country on earth entitled us to.

As the hours progress we offer prayers of thanksgiving for Donald Trump and his family. Prays for the innocent rally attendees who were killed and seriously wounded.  Yet the prayers are shadowed by an extreme emptiness, a vacant feeling looking to make sense of the event.

Now is not the time for blame or finger pointing but a time for solidarity of faith in the United States. Without faith in our future as a country all will be lost.  We will be no better than third world, akin to Venezuela, North Korea, Iran or any of the others that live in turmoil and disregard their citizens.

It is not for me to predict how the aftermath of this failed assassination will pan out, but it is up to me and every other American to redouble out efforts to return to something that resembles what the founding fathers envisioned.

With the help of God, a united citizenry and broad determination the United States of America will survive.
