I Give Up

Writer's picture: Virgil LassiterVirgil Lassiter

You know for the last seven years I railed against the Obama steamroller. I opposed his wrong headed executive orders, arrogant lecturing of the American people, his fanning the flames of racial divide, adopting a pro-Islamist attitude and generally doing what he said when he was a candidate. "Fundamentally transform America." In my view for the worse.

So here we are in 2017, roughly a hundred and some odd days into the Trump Presidency and I see that reversing the damage from Obama is in jeopardy. May never happen and only have the GOP to blame. They should borrow the title of Hillary Clinton's new book "What Happened", but I seriously think they will do exactly what she is trying to do - blame someone else for losing, or in their case being ineffective.

The Republicans were very vocal in challenging Obama because they knew it mattered not. They were bells without clappers. They had blank ammunition. Harry Reid thumbed his nose at them at every turn and Obama ignored them one Executive Order at a time.

The tide changed in November and after such a long wait to be effective common sense would say that they should have been ready. January, February and March should have been blockbusters in terms of significant new legislation - Repeal and Replace Obamacare, jobs, Tax reform, border security, infra-structure. What a dud.

I think we are witnessing incompetence of the highest magnitude. I also think that we have just seen the first in a long series of important declines in the support of the GOP.

I give you that the margin is narrow. 52-48. But when it comes to such a monumental vote as moving the Obamacare bill back to the House, even after Speaker Ryan made assurances that the bill would be conferenced and not voted on in its current position. The Maverick of the Senate, John McCain, became the Turncoat of the Senate. He was given the assurance he asked for earlier in the day and still voted no. His vote would have made a 50-50 tie to be broken by Vice President Pence. McCain has long been credited with being a very independent thinker but has now shown himself as being more liberal than he ever was conservative.

He single handedly killed any opportunity, as slim as it was, to rid the country of the abomination that President Obama fuasted on the people.

I am not sure I have the strength to delve into the comedy that is playing out with Russia, Russia, Russia all the time or the shinanegians going on with the top advisors in the White House or the Presidential tweet storms. I am also at the point where I have no more tolerance, no more excitement and no more hope that anything in Washington will ever change.
