Hold My Tongue?

Writer's picture: Virgil LassiterVirgil Lassiter

Watching TV last evening I was screaming at the screen. Suddenly the wife chimes in from the kitchen. “Hold your tongue, screaming won’t change anything.” A wise woman, I heed her advice and quiet returns, but the situation remains. The thoughts are raging in my mind it is just my mouth that has shut.

Can we suspend reality for an agenda? Can we dismiss logic for an ideology? Has arrogance supplanted intellect and wisdom?

By now you have probably figured out that the person on the screen was none other than President Barack Obama. He was speaking at the G20 meeting in Turkey and was being pressed at the news conference with some pointed questions about his planned response to the ISIS massacre in Paris. He did his usual “we are so sorry and stand with France in their time of mourning. We will fight to defeat the enemy…..” Blah, blah, blah, BS. When asked about a specific response he chose to defend his strategy – whatever that is or is not, saying that it might expand a bit but will not change just because 130+ Parisians were killed so brutally. He saw no reason to change his mysterious strategy. Not only was he quite insensitive but his attitude was almost belligerent to the reporters. My takeaway was that he was saying “How dare you challenge me.” as if tough questions are not allowed or at least are very unwelcomed by POTUS.

His logic, as poor as it is, was that we could not send 50,000 troops every time we wanted to go after a terrorist target. Two things wrong here. Nowhere in any suggestion voiced by the professionals, the pundits or the citizens called for such a deployment. We have many different resources and technologies that make is unlikely that a force so large would be necessary to be successful in killing a terrorist target. Much smaller highly equipped sorties are at our disposal. He was tone deaf to the monstrous event. It was like he was talking about a bad traffic accident on the I-95 that screwed up rush hour.

Does anyone not admire the international response in France, in Belgium, in Syria to react and punish those responsible? Our President seems to be satisfied to speak pablum for the masses and do nothing. One can only imagine how he would have reacted to the attacks of 9/11/01. Would he have classified it as a setback in the fight on terror and went to play golf.

My masculine self has the words “panty waste” running in my head along with some other much stronger invectives. Having grown up through the Carter administration I have always view that as the worst in our history. It was ineffective, weak and clueless most of the time. Mr. Obama and his underlings have long ago left the Carter administration in the dust. There is no fight in these folks who perpetuate the “no boots on the ground" mantra ad nauseam. Ask yourself a question, what would the world look like if we took that position in World War II? The world was on fire, civilization was threatened around the globe and we stepped up to save the day. When have we lost the will to fight a good fight? No one wants to see our sons and daughters injured or killed on foreign soil. Our gallantry, courage and fierceness ruled the day in Europe, Africa and the Pacific at great cost to the United States. 60 years later hindsight recalls that it was the only thing to do. Yes we need allies, but we need to lead not only from the White House but in the battlefield as well. Not doing so will be ultimately at our own expense.

Our current President and his advisers believe that they are smarter than all of the rest of us and they refuse to hear the voices of the masses that are often in disagreement with them. The landscape is littered with Executive Orders that were issued to circumvent Congress. as he explains this with “I have a pen and phone.” The tone of Mr. Obama’s arrogance is amping up. Pay attention, don’t just take my work for it. His skin is getting thinner by the day because even he is having a hard time defending his positions. His arguments are weak, his logic is flawed and his strategy is non-existent. He is driven by his ideology and cannot see that we are arriving at a very deep and wide precipice.

When asked directly “Mr. President, pardon my language, but why can’t we just go and take these bastards out?” Our Commander-in Chief paused looked derisively at the questioner and then said “I have spent the last three questions answering that, I don’t know what more you want from me.” How about, “I have sent the Rangers, Delta Force and Seal teams to the headquarters of ISIL to seek retribution for the heinous attack on our good friend and ally.” Don’t hold your breathe folks. Obama has no intention of putting up any real fight againstISIS. It becomes clearer everyday what his ideology is and how it is the most important part of who the President is. Damn reality, ignore world events, handcuff the most powerful military on the face of the earth because it does not suit your agenda.

In closing it is important to visit one more utterance from Obama. “We play into the hands of ISIL when we treat them like a state.” So then, is it once again Americas’ fault? Does he not understand that they now occupy vast adjacent territories in Iraq and Syria which by their own definition is now the Islamic State in Syria (ISIS) or if you prefer Islamic State in the Levant (ISIL). The home of their growing caliphate. Ignorance, obfuscation, distortion of facts will only obscure the action that is necessary to kill this terrible hoard and not allow them to accomplish more and more of their homicidal adventures.
